How do I convert the lengths used in the asf/amc files into meters?
The bone length and the root position data for asf/amc files that are in the database should be multiplied by this scale to convert to meters:

(1.0/0.45)*2.54/100.0 = 0.056444

0.45 is the scale from ASF file (define in the header)
2.54/100 to convert from inches to meters because the data is in inches

What marker set are you using?

These pictures accurately show marker placement. (Thanks to Elise for creating these!)
This document also describes the marker set. Correction to guide: We place the LFIN/RFIN markers on the knuckle of the middle finger.

How is this data captured?
We have a Vicon motion capture system consisting of 12 infrared MX-40 cameras, each of which is capable of recording at 120 Hz with images of 4 megapixel resolution. Motions are captured in a working volume of approximately 3m x 8m. The capture subject wears 41 markers and a stylish black garment.

May I have a copy of the entire database?
Sure! Please don't crawl this database for all motions. Here is a zipfile of all asf's and amc's. Here are all the c3d's - they sum to over 4GB so the files were split up by subject number: zipfile 0, zipfile 1a, zipfile1b, zipfile 2,3,4, and zipfile 5,6,7,8,9. Zipfiles of the mpg's can be found here, and a zipfile of the avi's is here. If you need some other combination of file types, drop us an email at jkh+mocap@cs.cmu.edu and we will be happy to help.

Markers and file formats, oh my?
The AMC file does not contain any information on the actual markers we used to capture, it only contains joint angles. The corresponding c3d file has a very large number of markers, because when we do the conversion process to ASF/AMC, the Vicon software (Vicon Bodybuilder) adds a bunch of model output markers that were not deleted before saving to the c3d again. Every file in the database should contain at least 41 markers, which is how many we use to capture data. The other 3 files, ast, mod, and mp, are the files Vicon Bodybuilder needs to convert the c3d to ASF/AMC. They are given to us by Vicon. If you take a look at them, they may show the relationship of the 1 AMC head point to the 4 captured markers in the c3d, and likewise with other markers the software groups together.

Why don't you use some other format, like bvh? How do I use this format?
Asf/amc is easy to parse and work with. Check out our Tools section for C++ code to begin projects, and links to other tools. That said, several external sites have converted our data into other formats; see the Resources page.

How can I use this data?
The motion capture data may be copied, modified, or redistributed without permission.
